Why Should You Care About the Water Coming Out of Your Shower?
Water utilities add chlorine to disinfect and sterilize tap water. At the point it leaves the plant, residual chlorine is a safety indicator — but it stays in the pipes all the way to your shower head, and it is still there when the water comes out.
The effect of residual chlorine on hair and skin is often more direct than we expect:
Hair
● : Chlorine is an oxidant. It damages the hair cuticle, leaving hair dry, frizzy and prone to split ends, and dyed color fades faster.
Skin
● : It damages the skin's natural lipid barrier, causing dryness, tightness, sensitivity and even itching.
Worse during hot showers
● : Higher water temperature speeds up chlorine volatilization. The steam in your bathroom carries chlorine too, and you breathe it in within a confined space.
So the real core value of a shower filter cartridge is not "filtering out visible sand and sediment" — it is handling invisible residual chlorine.2. The Three Common Filter Media in Shower FiltersThree filter media dominate shower filter cartridges today: activated carbon, KDF-55 and calcium sulfite. Their working principles are entirely different, and so are their strengths.2.1 Activated CarbonActivated carbon relies on its highly porous structure for physical adsorption, capturing residual chlorine, odors and some organic matter on its surface.
Pros
● : Removes chlorine and odors, improves the feel of the water; mature technology with controllable cost.
Limitations
● : Because it works by adsorption, its
total capacity is finite
— once the pores are saturated, it stops working. It is also relatively sensitive to water temperature.2.2 KDF-55KDF-55 is a high-purity copper-zinc alloy. Immersed in water it creates an electrolytic environment and works through an electrochemical oxidation–reduction reaction: the more negative zinc acts as the anode and loses electrons, while the more positive copper acts as the cathode and drives the reduction of free chlorine.
Chlorine removal
● : Stable removal of residual chlorine, and
insensitive to temperature
, which makes it especially suitable for hot shower applications.
Heavy metal removal
● : Removes a wide range of inorganic, water-soluble heavy metal ions such as lead, mercury, copper, nickel, cadmium and arsenic.
Bacteriostatic
● : Inhibits the growth and reproduction of bacteria and algae in water.
In one sentence: KDF-55 is the most versatile of the three — beyond dechlorination, it also removes heavy metals and inhibits bacteria.2.3 Calcium SulfiteCalcium sulfite reduces residual chlorine through a chemical reaction. It reacts quickly and delivers a high initial dechlorination efficiency, and it acts on both free chlorine and combined chlorine (chloramine).
Pros
● : Fast dechlorination reaction with an immediate effect.
Limitations
● : Its dechlorination lifespan is relatively short, and real-world performance depends heavily on granulation quality — the calcium sulfite content, packing density and particle size all significantly affect the result. Two cartridges made of "the same" calcium sulfite but from different raw materials and processes can perform very differently.
