An aromatherapy shower head holds a replaceable scent cartridge. Warm water flows through it. A light fragrance releases into the spray. That is the whole mechanism.
It sounds like a gimmick. It mostly isn't. But the category is full of vague claims, so this guide sticks to specifics: how it works, what the scent actually feels like, how long cartridges last, and who should buy one.
The build order matters. Water enters the handle. It passes the filter media first. Then it reaches the scent cartridge. Then it exits the nozzles.
Filtering first is deliberate. Sediment would clog a scent cartridge quickly. Filtering first protects it.
Heat does the rest. Warm water and steam carry the fragrance into the enclosed space of a shower cubicle. That is why the effect is stronger in a hot shower than a cool one.

The scent is real. In an enclosed shower with hot water, you notice it within seconds. It is ambient and soft. It is not a strong perfume, and it should not be.
What it does not do is medical. A eucalyptus shower feels clearing. It is not a treatment. Any supplier claiming therapeutic outcomes is overselling, and that oversell is what makes buyers suspicious of the whole category.

On sensitivity: fragrance concentration in the water is low, so most people are fine. Anyone with a known allergy to a specific botanical should skip that scent.
